1 Is Rosa Lee Young a school or
a daycare center?
We are both. We are chartered by NY State as a school, and we provide
care for children of working parents 12 months a year.
2 How does the Center operate?
Rosa Lee Young is a not-for-profit organization administered by professionals.
Our volunteer Board of Directors currently consists of current and retired
teachers, businessmen and women, a librarian, a CPA, two college professors,
a former Village Trustee, a former banker, and a hospital administrator.
3 Who can attend the Center?
Rosa Lee Young is a non-sectarian early childhood center that is open
to children from all ethnic and socio-economic backgrounds.
4 What is the philosophy of Rosa Lee Young
Childhood Center?
The philosophy is based on the work of Jean Piaget, a Swiss psychologist
who has had a major influence on education throughout the 20th century.
In keeping with Piaget's work, the Rosa Lee Young staff and administration
are devoted to promoting each child's social, physical, intellectual,
creative and emotional development. Each child is seen as a unique individual
with a unique learning style, temperament and personality.
5 What happens when the public schools are
closed for summer vacation?
During the 9-week summer school vacation, Rosa Lee Young is open. The
Center continues with its toddler, pre-kindergarten and kindergarten programs.
In addition, programs for school age children expand to full-day and include
trips to nearby parks and pools.
6 What happens on public school holidays?
The Center closes only thirteen days a year: New Years (two days), Martin
Luther King Day, Presidents Day, Good Friday, Memorial Day, July 4th,
Labor Day and the day after (Organization Day), Thanksgiving (two days)
and Christmas (two days).
7 Are there any scholarships?
Yes, there are scholarships available. A discount for the second child

8 Is there any tuition assistance?
Yes, there is tuition assistance. The Nassau County Department of Social
Services has a program for families that qualify. Call the center for
more information.
9 What is the ratio of children to teachers?
The ratio of children to staff changes with the ages of the children.
For toddlers it is 4:1, pre-kindergarten is 7:1, kindergarten is 8:1,
and the school-age ratio is 10:1.
10 What are the staff and teachers' qualifications?
The Rosa Lee Young Childhood Center is known for its professionalism.
Two-thirds of the teachers have a Bachelor Degree or higher. The remainder
of the staff have a minimum of an Associates Degree. All staff members
complete 30 hours of in service training every two years as required by
our license. The Center is under the direction of a highly experienced
and qualified professional administrator who holds a Master's degrees
in Early Childhood Education and has many years of experience in the field.
11 What are the Center's hours?
The Center is open from 7:30 AM to 6:00 PM to accommodate working parents.
