History
The Rosa Lee Young Childhood Center was established in 1972 by a group
of community leaders. The goal of the center was to make affordable child
care available to working families of all socioeconomic levels. Rosa Lee
Young has been in its current home, a building the center owns, since
1981.
Programs
Rosa Lee Young, chartered under the Board of Regents of the New York State
Education Department, provides a Toddler Program for children who are
between the ages of 18 and 36 months; a Pre-K Program for children 3 to
5 years old; a Kindergarten Program for 5 year old children; and an After-School
Program for children in grades one through five.
Children
Rosa Lee Young Childhood Center provides children with a warm, nurturing,
safe environment, rooted in education, where daily learning takes place.
The Center's full day, full year program reflects a developmental approach
to learning. Children are continually encouraged to learn, to explore
new ideas, to express themselves creatively and to learn the important
lessons of good peer relationships and good relationships with the adults
who are their teachers and care givers.
Staff
The Rosa Lee Young Childhood Center is known for its professionalism.
Three-quarters of the teachers have a Bachelor Degree or higher. The remainder
of the staff have a minimum of an Associates Degree. All staff members
complete 30 hours of in service training every two years as required by
the state license. The ratio of children to staff changes with the ages
of the children. For toddlers it is 4:1, pre-kindergarten is 7:1, kindergarten
is 8:1, and the school-age ratio is 10:1.
Administration
The Rosa Lee Young Childhood Center is under the direction of a highly
experienced and qualified professional administrator. The Executive Director
holds a Master's degree in Early Childhood Education and has many years
of experience in the field. The Executive Director has been with the Rosa
Lee Young program since 1974.
Parents
Parents are partners in all the activities of the Center. Just as the
Center staff see each child as an individual, they also consider each
family unique. The staff is respectful of all values held by each individual
family. All staff members convey through words and actions that they value
the child in the same way that parents value their children. Once a child
has been enrolled, its parents automatically become members of the RLY
Parent Association. The Association provides the school with resources,
information and people power to improve and enrich the educational, social
and individual experience for the children.
